Just Like Your Grandma’s Place: a Ramble through the Ranch House

-With Sara Lachenman of Four Over One Design

May 7, 2024: 6-7pm
The Temple Building
302 W. Main Street, Durham

From its Southern California origins, the Ranch house is an icon of American design and emblematic of all things midcentury. We will cover its history, spread, design features, and revival, focusing particularly on Durham’s neighborhoods. Join us May 7 at 6pm for the story of this classic American home and then join us for a two-day tour of Ranch-style homes around Durham May 18-19 (separate ticket required for the home tour: available for purchase here).

About the speaker: Sara Lachenman is the owner of Four over One Design, a woman-owned interior architecture and preservation consulting business, founded in 2009. With a degree from UNC-Greensboro’s historic preservation program, she has been working in Durham nearly 20 years and has a granular knowledge of our city’s older neighborhoods. Sara relishes the stories of our city, and figuring out how each individual house has evolved over time, as well as figuring out what details and features make a house distinctive.
