Preservation Durham bestowed the first Neighborhood Conservation Awards in 2002. These awards honor those whose work helps preserve Durham's distinct and diverse neighborhoods with programs or projects which help maintain the historic fabric of neighborhoods, thereby preserving the context of properties within those neighborhoods.

Congratulations to 2002 NCA Winners
LAKEWOOD PARTNERSHIP. Promoting the restoration and maintenance of properties in the Lakewood Neighborhood. Residents of Lakewood have banded together to identify endangered properties in their neighborhood and have worked with Preservation Durham's Endangered Properties Program to encourage buyers to renovate them. Two houses already have been restored through the program.

Restoration of 1001 W. Trinity

COREY AND EMILY THOMPSON
Restoration of 1001 W. Trinity. The Thompson's home is one of four bungalows that had been turned into apartments and inappropriately and poorly remodeled. Today, the house has been returned to a comfortable single family home.

Restoration of the old Garrett Grocery at 2606 Hillsborough Road

FISHER SIGNS AND MURALS
Restoration of the old Garrett Grocery at 2606 Hillsborough Road. This storefront building has served the needs of Old West Durham since the heyday of Erwin Mills. Its new occupant continues the tradition, preserving hard wood floors and bead board ceilings while accomodating a busy sign shop.

HPSD ENDANGERED PROPERTIES COMMITTEE. Dedication and hard work to expand the program. After saving a single building in 1999, the EPP transferred homes and businesses in 2001, ensuring their places in the architectural heritage of Durham.

Restoration of the Montaldo's Building, 128 E. Parrish Street

LARRY POLLARD
Restoration of the Montaldo's Building, 128 E. Parrish Street. Originally a gas station before it became the fashionable ladies' dress shop Montaldo's, this building's construction of prefabricated metal panels makes it unique in downtown. Bits of both the gas station and the dress shop have been retained in the current law offices.

Knox Landing In-fill Development, West Knox Street

G. CRABTREE HOME BUILDING
Knox Landing In-fill Development, West Knox Street. Five new homes have been built on long vacant lots in Duke Park. Built in varying architectural styles, they blend well with the neighborhood.
