The 2003 NCAs honor a variety of projects including an addition to a church and the adaptive re-use of a commercial building and a school as well as the creative renovation of a private residence.

Congratulations to 2003 NCA Winners

William Crompton Bennett Fellowship Center, 927 W. Trinity Avenue

TRINITY AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
William Crompton Bennett Fellowship Center, 927 W. Trinity Avenue. The new construction of the fellowship center integrates well with the Gothic style church designed by Rose and Rose in 1925. The result is harmonious and a testament to the commitment and faith the church family shares with its residential neighbors.

1018 Monmouth Avenue
House, 1018 Monmouth Avenue

LAURA WEISBERG AND DAVID WONG
House, 1018 Monmouth Avenue. Built on a duplex plan, this house has always been a single-family residence. The owners have done a contemporary, fresh renovation in adapting this historic house to modern styles and needs while emphasizing the architectural elements. They modernized kitchens and bathrooms, replaced radiators with a forced-air heating and cooling system, and converted coal-burning grates to fireboxes for wood fires.

1208 W. Chapel Hill Street
Commercial Building, 1208 W. Chapel Hill Street

COMMUNITY LAND TRUSTEES
Commercial Building, 1208 W. Chapel Hill Street. Once a diner, at one point a florist, this building is now an anchor in the West End. Recent work included restoration of the distinctive glass block walls, installation of a new roof monitor, and new interior partitions incorporating curved glass block echoing the exterior walls. A new stair under the roof monitor makes the lower level into a useful community meeting space.

Lyon Park Center
former Lyon Park Elementary School

CITY OF DURHAM AND CALVARY MINISTRIES
former Lyon Park Elementary School, now the Lyon Park Community Center, 1313 Halley Street. The renovation of this 1929 elementary school combines original and new elements to create a new use for the building. The school's style and scale still fit with the houses that crowded it so closely. Creative adaptive use projects like this hold promise for many of the city's old school buildings.
