35TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS

 

hardscrabble
 

May 23: Tour of Hardscrabble Plantation 2:00-5:00pm, 219 Hardscrabble Drive. Prservation Durham members and friends enjoyed visiting one of the oldest homes in Durham County. Built c. 1775, this elegant house was home to generations of the Cain family. It was restored from near ruin 35 years ago and won Preservation Durham's Pyne Award in 1977. Hardscrabble is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Durham County Historic Landmark. The house retains may of the original Georgian and Federal design elements that made it architecturally significant. $10 per person.

June 12: Tour of Maplewood Cemetery 6:00-8:00pm, 1621 Duke University Road. Tom Miller and Milo Pyne leda tour of monuments at the graves of many prominent Durham residents who have been buried here since 1872. Heavenly refreshments were provided. $25 per person.

June 16: Jazz Concert with Ellen Ciompi, 6:00-8:00pm, King's Daughters Inn, 204 N. Buchanan Blvd. Local jazz and cabaret singer Ellen Ciompi entertained members and friends at this elegant boutique hotel created from the King's Daughters Home for retired women.

September 23: 35th Anniversary Gala Celebration: Hill House. 5:30-7:30pm, 900 South Duke Street. Preservation Durham members and friends celebrated the conclusion of our anniversary year at this elegant historic home while welcoming members of Preservation North Carolina who were holding their annual meeting in Durham!

Four houses across from the Hill House were open for a Candlelight Tour during this event! Everyone injoyed visiting these historic homes in Morehead Hill: the Tudor Revival style W. P. Budd House, built in 1924; the Colonial Revival style Carr-Carver House (1927) and Lipscomb-Carr House (1914); and the 1953 George Watts Hill, Jr. House, a fine example of post-war modernism.
