Walking Tour Guides
Preservation Durham is currently offering three walking tours of the Downtown Historic District. Guide teams lead one Saturday morning tour every two to three months between April and November, totaling about 10 hours during the 8-month tour season. You can pair with a veteran tour guide or bring your own partner. Many teams are spouses or good friends who come planning to share the effort. Scripts and training are provided. Find out more at Preservation Durham EVENTS.
Preservation Party
Preservation Durham's Annual Preservation Party and Fall Fundraiser has become a holiday season highlight! Join the hosting committee to help put together this fun event! The 4th Annual Preservation Party will be held Friday, November 10, 2006. Volunteers can help discover exciting donations for the raffle, arrange entertainment, or help in many other ways. The committee for this event has the most fun even before the party begins!
Annual Old Durham Tour

Preservation Durham needs an army of volunteers to make the annual Old Durham Home Tour a successful event. The 10th Annual Tour in 2006 explored Old North Durham, one of the Bull City's first streetcar suburbs. Some of the many jobs that must be done to put on a successful tour are listed below. If you are interested in serving on a committee or volunteering for our 2007 tour, please contact Preservation Durham at (919)-682-3036 or email . You can also print our online volunteer form and mail or fax it to the Preservation Durham office. THANK YOU!

PREPARE FOR THE TOUR
Tour preparations begin early in the year as volunteers organize all the details that make the tour a success.
ASSIST DURING THE TOUR
On the day of the tour, volunteers make sure everything runs smoothly and that tour-goers enjoy their day out.

SPONSORS: Outgoing and friendly people get our sponsors involved.

AD SALES: Outgoing and friendly people sell ads for the Tour Guidebook. Many advertisers have placed ads every year.

TOUR GUIDEBOOK: Writers and graphic designers create our guidebook, promotional flyer, Tour's Eve Celebration invitation, and other print materials.

PUBLICITY: Writers produce and distribute press releases and keep local media informed about the tour. Enthusiastic volunteers coordinate mass mailings of tour notices and Tour's Eve Celebration invitations.

TICKET SALES: Friendly and enthusiastic people secure locations throughout the Triangle for ticket sales, arrange ticket distribution and collection of funds, and sell tickets on the day of the tour.

TOUR'S EVE CELEBRATION: The best party in Durham! Creative party planners arrange and staff the Friday evening gala for homeowners, sponsors, and tour patrons.

LOGISTICS: One or two very well organized people coordinate all the physical details of the tour including signage, distribution of materials to houses, and collection of proceeds from sales on tour day.

HOUSE CAPTAINS: Outgoing and well-organized people make great house captains! A house captain is in charge of each site on the tour and is HPSD's liaison with the homeowner, enlists and trains docents, and manages the site during the tour.

DOCENTS: Guide visitors at each tour site, explaining the history of the site and providing general information about the tour. Docents work two-hour shifts and are trained by the House Captain.

TICKET TAKERS: Friendly people welcome visitors to each site and provide general information about the tour. Ticket takers work two hour shifts.

Office Assistants
Preservation Durham's hard-working professional staff is small, and help with office work such as copying, filing, and phone answering is always appreciated. The staff are really happy to have helpers when big mailings to our membership are in the works!
Website Assistants
Preservation Durham's website preservationdurham.org has grown into a complex website with many components. The webmaster would appreciate help from writers to add more content about Durham and its history and with management of the bi-monthly calendar.
