DURHAM NATIONAL REGISTER SITES

The National Register of Historic Places, a division of the National Park Service, is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archeological resources. Properties listed include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture.

Owners of individually listed properties or properties within National Register Districts are eligible for tax credits to help them preserve their historic homes, businesses, and institutions. The most recent National Register Historic District in Durham is a 50-square-block area of East Durham added in December, 2004.

Nationwide, nearly 73,000 sites are listed on the National Register; 58 of them are in Durham County.

National Historic Landmarks

National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. They form a common bond among all Americans. While there are many historic places across the nation, only a small number have meaning to all Americans--these we call our National Historic Landmarks. Today, fewer than 2,500 historic places bear this national distinction. There are three National Historic Landmarks in Durham.

Working with citizens throughout the nation, the National Historic Landmarks Program draws upon the expertise of National Park Service staff who work to nominate new landmarks and provide assistance to existing landmarks. A friends group of owners and managers, the National Historic Landmark Stewards Association, also works to preserve, protect, and promote National Historic Landmarks.

Duke Homestead and Tobacco Factory
Duke Homestead Road (Named November 13, 1966): In 1890 Washington Duke's son, James B. Duke, organized the American Tobacco Company, preeminent in its time. The family's frame house, reconstructed small tobacco factory of log construction, and frame third factory (c. 1852-74) remain. Duke Homestead is a State Historic Site.

North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company,
116 W. Parrish Street, within the Downtown Historic District (Named May 15, 1975): Built in 1921, this building was the second home office of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, which was founded in 1898. This company evolved out of a tradition of mutual benefit societies and fraternal organizations which by the 20th century had become the most important social institutions in Afro-American life, with the exception of the church. From the beginning, the Mutual symbolized racial progress and is an institutional legacy of the ideas of racial solidarity and self-help. NC Mutual was a key part of Durham's Black Wall Street.

Blackwell (W. T.) and Company Tobacco Factory
201 W. Pettigrew Street, within the American Tobacco Historic District. (Named December 22, 1977): From 1874 to 1957, this factory was the home of Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco, the first truly national tobacco brand. W.T. Blackwell and Company introduced production, packaging, and marketing techniques that made Bull Durham a part of American industrial history and folklore.
