Julianne Patterson, Executive Director

Julianne is driven by the belief that historic preservation is a collective responsibility and an integral part of a just and sustainable Durham. Her vision for Preservation Durham extends beyond the bricks and mortar, recognizing that the preservation of our history is inseparable from the well-being of our community.


Julianne graduated from Virginia Tech with a BA in Art History and Humanities and earned a MS in Historic Preservation from the Clemson/College of Charleston Graduate Program in Historic Preservation. Previously, she worked at the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation in Seattle, WA, and Preservation North Carolina.

Sydney Alston, Programs Coordinator

Sydney’s passion is educating people of all ages about the significance of the places in which they live and teaching communities to become good stewards of their shared and personal histories. She believes Preservation Durham’s mission allows everyone to engage with the city’s history and culture more uniquely and deeply.


Sydney is a Durham native with a BA in history from Queens University of Charlotte. She received a master’s in public history from North Carolina State University and is currently a doctoral student in public history at NC State.
